Terrorism Starts at the Breakfast Table

It has often been said that International Terrorism stArts at home and at the breakfast table and it is really true. You see if the parents have hate, then they teach hate to their offspring and if they discuss this at the breakfast table, well there you have it. It is rather hard to educate children not to hate when the parents are teaching it.

If an entire community, country or religion is teaching hate then it should be no wonder so many young people attempt to join international terrorist groups. When International Terrorist Organizations pay families when their kids become suicide bombers you can see the problem and why it is so hard to stop.

Many academics have said we need to win the heArts and minds of the people, but that is truly a lost cause, because in the end one angry Cleric can re-warp the minds of the masses and undo years of hard work. For Gods sake when you have people in an outrage over a mere cArtoon in a place over 4000 miles away you know that there is a real problem.

So, if Terrorism stArts at the breakfast table, then lets stArt spiking the cereal boxes with positive world views and positive Western World stories and Middle Eastern peoples successes in areas of the Western World. A little cereal box philosophy for your Wheaties; consider this in 2006.

Genes and Human Behavior

The debate on the nature of Human Behavior development dates back to the seventeenth century. With philosophical thinkers such as the John Locke, who believed that at birth the Human mind is tabula rasa, a 'blank slate' that is gradually filled with experience. On the other hand, the French philosopher Rene Descartes, was a seventeenth century nativist who believed that knowledge of the world was largely innate or inborn and that heredity determined certain abilities and capacities. Popular in the eighteenth century was the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau who claimed that children should be free to develop as nature dictates. However towards the beginning of the nineteenth century the heredity thesis was more dominant but then again the dominant opinion swung to the environmental perspective by th e middle of the century.

If it is to be believed that Genes play a more significant role in the development of Behavior, then it should be true that a person's IQ should always remain constant. There has been evidence from studies to suggest however that this is not the case. Pollitt and Gorman gave children in developing countries a quantity of high quality nutritional supplements during infancy and early childhood, it was later found that their IQ and vocabulary scores were considerably higher than those of non-supplemented children. Also Heber et al conducted a study call 'The Milwaukee Project'. Heber et al began a programmed with forty poor black families, commencing with the birth of their babies and continuing until their children started school at the age of six. Twenty of the women were given job training and sent to school (the 'experimental group') and twenty were not helped in any way (the 'control group'). When the children were starting school, the 'experimental group' children has an average IQ score of 120.7, while the 'control group' had an average score of just 87.2 By the age of ten these were 194 compared with 86 for the 'control group'. Educationally the experimental group were significant superior also. It was found that in later years, after the program had ended, that both groups decreased in performance. These results contradict the notion of the genetics argument, that as the environment has no influence over IQ, which is inherited genetically, an individuals IQ shall therefore remain constant over time. Rather they suggest that the environment has a significant effect upon cognitive performance and ability, including IQ stages.

With much consideration to research it can now answered that yes, Genes do play a significant role in the d evelopment of Behavior, however is cannot be said that Genes play a more significant role. Research and studies upon Monozygotic and Dizygotic twins has offered significant support to the genetic argument however if Genes do determine the development of Behavior then it would be true that, firstly, an individuals IQ would always remain constant over time and neither increase and decrease however studies previously considered provide evidence to suggest that this is not the case. Secondly, it would also mean that any experience could have no impact or affect upon Behavior, this suggestion has also been widely discredited, as there is much evidence to imply otherwise. Finally, if Genes are the sole determinant of Behavior then any attempts to change Behavior should fail, yet evidence of success rates of environment enrichment programs prove otherwise. It is generally now accepted by psychologists worldwide that Behavior< /a> cannot be determined by either genetic or environmental factors but instead a continuous interaction between the two. As Hebb pointed out in 1949, an egg cannot survive without its environment, take it away and the egg would die but without its genetic base, the egg would not have existed in the first place.

Boycott Frump: GenX GenNet and the Power of Lingerie

Gen-X has become Gen-Net, the networked Generation. Among the lot of us, we have the power today--right here, right now--to completely transform our culture overnight. Together, we can say no to just about anything and make that no a reality. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to organize!

First off, let's say a unified no to the current state of Women's Fashion. I've about had it with Women's Clothing that looks like it fell out of the 1950s version of the Stepford Wives handbook. One of the reasons people always think I'm about 10 years younger than I am is that I dress about 10 years younger than I am. I just can't bring myself to adopt the soccer mom sweater set as an expression of style.

I think the real problem here is that there aren't enough straight men in the Fashion industry. Let's face it, if straight men were in charge of designing Women's clothes, we'd all be wearing Lingerie to the grocery store. I'm not saying that's what I'm hoping for, but it would be a lot better than looking through a hundred June Cleaver outfits for one little red dress.

I know, ladies, I know. You're concerned that you don't have the figure for that kind of thing anymore, right? Well I'm convinced that if Women's Clothing were designed by straight men, I'd actually be working out every day. And drinking plenty of water. And eating vegetarian meals...

Not only would I have the figure of an 18 year old, but I'd probably live to enjoy it for a hundred and twenty years.

Besides which, men don't care. Honestly, they don't. When you think about men making jokes about some girl not looking h ot enough, think about where you remember hearing it. Ninety percent of the time, you heard it on television. Is that how we're judging reality now? By television? Please.

Real men love Women. Love us. Every beautiful curvy inch of us. I promise! So turn off the TV and go show off a little. That is, if you can find anything sexy to wear.

The Chakri Kings of Thailand in the Golden Age of Rattanakosin

The first of the Chakri kings, King Rama I or King Phra Phuttayotfa, who reigned from 1782 1809, founded the dynasty when he established Bangkok as the capital of Thailand. King Rama I is remembered as the great warrior who put an end to the constant Burmese threat and consolidated the kingdom.

Literature flourished during the First Reign. Works include the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Indian Ramayana epic and the translation of the Chinese classic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

When King Rama II or King Phra Phutthalertla Napalai, the son of King Rama I, ascended the throne, his reign from 1809 1824 signaled the start of a dynasty. Like his father, King Rama II loved literature and was renowned as a great poet.

The Chakri dynasty continued with King Rama III or King Phra Nangklao, the son of King Rama II, who reigned from 1824 1851. Unlike his father, he had no interest in literature. Even the greatest of Thai poets, Sunthorn Phu, found no favor in the Third Reign.

In King Rama IV or King Mongkut (1851 1868), another son of King Rama II, the kingdom had one of the most enlightened Chakri kings. After 27 years in monkhood during which he studied Buddhism, English, Latin, science, mathematics and astrology, King Monkut ascended the throne at 47.

Politically astute, he saw the growing pressures of colonialism and prepared his son, Prince Chulalongkorn, for the challenges ahead.

The reign of King Rama V or King Chulalongkorn (1868 1910, was the golden age of the Chakri Reformation. The most revered of the Chakri kings, King Chulalongkorn reorganized the government, improved education, infrastructure and communications. Slavery was abolished.

His crowning achievement was the ability to neutralize Britain and France at the height of their imperial power and preserve the independence of Thailand.

King Rama VI or King Vajiravudh, the son of King Rama V, reign ed from 1910 1925. The first of the Chakri kings to be educated overseas, King Vajiravudh introduced surnames for the people, changed Thai flag to its present form, enacted compulsory primary education and established Chulalongkorn University in memory of his father. The Seventh Reign, however, incurred massive spending in a fragile economy, a harbinger of events in the next reign.

The last of King Rama V's sons, King Rama VII or King Prajadhipok, reigned from 1925 1935. He was also the last of the Chakri kings to reign as absolute monarch. The coup on 24 June 1932 ended the absolute monarchy.

King Prajadhipok reigned briefly as the first constitutional monarch in a stormy relationship with the new government. He abdicated on 2 March 1935.

After the abdication, young Prince Ananda, the son of Prince Mahidol and grandson of King Rama V, he was appointed king at the age of ten. Regency was appointed while the young king continued his studies.

King Rama VIII or King Ananda Mahidol had a short and tragic reign from 1935 1946. On 9 June 1946, less than a year after he returned from his studies, the young King Ananda was found shot. No verdict was returned.

In 1946, the present monarch, King Rama IX or King Bhumipol Adulyadej, younger brother of King Ananda, ascended the throne. The reign saw the blossoming of a close relationship between the benevolent monarch and his people, one of deep respect and fatherly love.

It seemed the ideal model of a constitutional monarchy over the longest reign in history. Perhaps the one that King Prajadhipok was so desperately seeking in 1932.

The nine kings of the Chakri dynasty have seen old Siam from a group of fragmented kingdoms under constant external threat to a unified kingdom. The kingdom went through a painful transition from an absolute monarchy to a tumultuous constitutional democracy and onto a thriving and stable nation.

The reign of the Chakri Kings in Thailand has covered more than 220 years over which the kingdom has preserved its unity, independence and prosperity.

For more on the Chakri Kings.

Chakri Kings first appeared in Tour Bangkok Legacies a historical travel site on people, places and events that shaped the landscape of Bangkok. The author Eric Lim, a free-lance writer, lives in Bangkok Thailand.

Stopping Green Peace Once and For All

Those little sneaky bastards said a cop in Ireland recently; he was talking about Green Peace and their persnickety prank. Some say that Green Peace lays on the far fringe of the far-left environmental movement.

They are right Green Peace is a pain in the ass they must be stopped from their dastardly deeds as they are Heathens and Scoundrels in the midst said a farmer who as clearing some trees for some more acreage to farm. Additionally he said that all people who call themselves Environmental Activists must stand together and reprimand the Green Peace Group and the eco-terrorist fringe group, which often intimidates, threatens, slanders and uses extortion techniques to shut up anyone who does not think the way they do. Or burn down businesses and homes and cause pollution in order to clean the air. It is for this reason that Environmental issue will continue to struggle thru this decade and perhaps even into the next.

Many luxury log cabin owners have stated that; Environmental Green Peace and the Eco-ELF-Terrorists fringe must be stopped and they have joined opposition to pro-environmental issues in the US and will vote, donate monies to candidates against environmental movements and influence as many people as they can to do the same. All because the environmental fringe was out of control and not because these homeowners were against the environment, quite the contrary.

Some of these homeowners have urged all Americans to defeat environmental movement initiatives, not because it is morally wrong, but because of the abuse that their fringe, which they refuse to control. They see this fringe group as detrimental as the worst violent fringe of any civil rights groups movement in the history of the United States. Thats how they see it and we must therefore all stand united against environmental terrorists like ELF and Green Peace but simultaneously doing what makes sense to maintain a healthy environment. Consider all this in 2006.

99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall: Francis Scott Key

In 1814 Francis Scott Key was on board an American ship behind the British fleet as it bombarded Fort McHenry. They viewed the bombardment from about 8 miles away. After the bombardment, the American Flag was still flying. This inspired key to write our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.

Read about Francis Scott key at http://www.nps.gov/fomc/tguide/Lesson9a.htm. He was born in Maryland to a wealthy family. He was practicing law at the time of the bombardment. The reason he was in the harbor was to gain release from the British Dr. William Beanes, his client and close friend.

A religious man, he once decided to leave the law for the ministry. He was against the war of 1812 but he put aside his concerns and served briefly in the field artillery.

Key had written an earlier poem entitled When the Warrior Returns in 1806. The Warriors were those that fought the Barbary Pirates. (See http://www.bcpl.net/~etowner/anacron2.html) He put this to song by us ing an old English drinking song called To Anacreon in Heaven. When he wrote The Star Spangled Banner he put it to the same tune.

Anacreon was a Greek lyric poet that lived in the Fifth Century B.C. The Anacreontic Society was a popular gentlemens club in London. You can see a copy of the song at http://www.bcpl.net/~etowner/Anacreon.html.

Arthur Koestler

ARTHUR KOESTLER:

Humanitarian, historian and scientist are just a few of the labels associated with this most excellent man of letters. Here is a quote from his book The Act of Creation.

The oldest and most fundamental of all tricks is to disguise people in costumes and to put them on a stage with masks or paint on their faces; the audience is thereby given the impression that the events represented are happening here and now, regardless of how distant they really are in space and time. The effect of this procedure is to induce a lively bisociated condition in the minds of the audience. The spectator knows, in one compartment of his mind, that the people on the stage are actors, whose names are familiar to him; and he knows that they are acting for the express purpose of creating an illusi on in him, the spectator. Yet in another compartment of his mind he experiences fear, hope, pity, accompanied by palpitations, arrested breathing, or tears -- all induced by events which he knows to be pure make-believe. It is indeed a remarkable phenomenon that a grown-up person, knowing all the time that he faces a screen onto which shadows are projected by a machine, and knowing furthermore quite well what is going to happen at the end--for instance, that the police will arrive just in the nick of time to save the hero-- should nevertheless go through agonies of suspense, and display the corresponding bodily symptoms. It is even more remarkable that this capacity for living in two universes at once, one real, one imaginary, should be accepted without wonder as a commonplace. (3)

Author who hopes he will be regarded alongside Koestler someday.
