Women of the Southern Ute Reservation

In this essay, I will examine the American laws concerning Women in regards to Marriage, divorce, and property, and how Ute Women responded to these laws. Before being confined to the reservations, the Ute men and Women freely adhered to their own Marriage customs, which gave Women freedom to marry whom they chose and gave each partner relatively easy divorce proceedings. In Ute societal customs, Women were valued and powerful members of the tribal community by virtue of their labor and their ability to bear children (Shoemaker 159).

After being forced onto reservations and the enactment of the Dawes Act, married Ute Women were left with no legal standing as wives to their husbands in the allotment of land, unless the couple underwent a Christian Marriage ceremony. In the event of a divorce, according to Ute custom, the ex-wife was unable to share in the couple's assets (in this case, land).

Osburn mentions that in the years from 1905 to 1917, there were ten divorce cases among the original allottees at Southern Ute reservation (Shoemaker 162). Of these ten, records exist concerning eight of them, who appealed to the Indian agent for help in gaining a portion of the land thereby resisting their newly assigned position of economic subservience (Shoemaker 162). Four of the Women received land from their ex-husbands, whether from the husbands' kindness or pressure from the Indian agent is unknown. The other four Women never received any land from their ex-husbands, even though they persisted in their claims based on the fact that they had fulfilled their traditional Ute role by bearing children.

Gold Jewelry The Rest of The Story

Gold is one of the metals taken from the earth and is probably the first metal known to man. Its first use has been traced back to 3600 B. C. and was probably originally obtained in Egypt, as the ancient methods of obtaining Gold in Egypt are illustrated in early rock carvings. It is said in the book of Genesis that Abraham, in the twentieth century B. C., when he went out of Egypt, was very rich not only in cattle but in Gold and silver both in dust and ingots. In Exodus xxv, 29, we read that Moses was commanded by the Lord to make spoons of Gold for the Tabernacle. In the writings of Homer, Sophocles, Herodotus, Pliny and others, Gold is frequently mentioned.

Gold is widely distributed in nature and is found in many ways and in all parts of the world. It is found in water, in the ice of Alaska, in the sand of South Africa, and in the quartz of Colorado, and is frequently found native, though usually alloyed with silver or iron. The purest specimens of native Gold have yielded from 96 to 99 per cent, pure metal.

It is remarkable that all of the races of mankind have selected Gold as the first and chief representative of value. In the earliest times it was used as a medium of exchange in the form of bars, spikes and rings; the rings could be opened and closed so that a chain could be made for convenience in carrying. Gold was also used at a very early period for the construction of personal ornaments, as the savage found it e asy to beat out the pure ore into circlets to adorn his limbs. The universal use of Gold in preference to all other metals is due to its many properties; its color and luster, its malleability and its indestructibility. Gold does not tarnish nor can it be destroyed. It may be reduced to a liquid and the liquid transferred to a powder, and the powder when melted in a crucible returns to its natural state. It is the most malleable of all metals and has been hammered into leaves 1-282,000th of an inch thick. An ounce of Gold may be drawn out into a wire fifty miles long. The tenacity of Gold is seven tons per square inch.

Pure Gold, being too soft for all ordinary purposes, is generally alloyed with other metals. Silver and copper are the principal alloys used, although iron is used in small quantities for different purposes. Pure silver has a brilliant white color and is the whitest of all metals. No metal surpasses silver in its luster and hardness it ranges between pure Gold and pure copper. It is more fusible than copper or Gold, melting at a bright red heat or at 1873F. It is commonly used for the purpose of alloying Gold in its pure state, but if too much is added it makes the Gold pale. Pure copper is the only metal that has a reddish appearance. It is both malleable and ductile; hence it is very useful as an alloy for Gold.

Stopping Green Peace Once and For All

Those little sneaky bastards said a cop in Ireland recently; he was talking about Green Peace and their persnickety prank. Some say that Green Peace lays on the far fringe of the far-left environmental movement.

They are right Green Peace is a pain in the ass they must be stopped from their dastardly deeds as they are Heathens and Scoundrels in the midst said a farmer who as clearing some trees for some more acreage to farm. Additionally he said that all people who call themselves Environmental Activists must stand together and reprimand the Green Peace Group and the eco-terrorist fringe group, which often intimidates, threatens, slanders and uses extortion techniques to shut up anyone who does not think the way they do. Or burn down businesses and homes and cause pollution in order to clean the air. It is for this reason that Environmental issue will continue to struggle thru this decade and perhaps even into the next.

Many luxury log cabin owners have stated that; Environmental Green Peace and the Eco-ELF-Terrorists fringe must be stopped and they have joined opposition to pro-environmental issues in the US and will vote, donate monies to candidates against environmental movements and influence as many people as they can to do the same. All because the environmental fringe was out of control and not because these homeowners were against the environment, quite the contrary.

Some of these homeowners have urged all Americans to defeat environmental movement initiatives, not because it is morally wrong, but because of the abuse that their fringe, which they refuse to control. They see this fringe group as detrimental as the worst violent fringe of any civil rights groups movement in the history of the United States. Thats how they see it and we must therefore all stand united against environmental terrorists like ELF and Green Peace but simultaneously doing what makes sense to maintain a healthy environment. Consider all this in 2006.

Stopping African Killer Bee Colonies from Swarming Worth the Effort?

Is it worth the effort to stop African Killer Bees from swarming and killing humans? Each year there are hundreds of attacks World Wide. Some say we should train the bees to help us rid the world of international terrorism and sting the bad guys to death. Others fear for their lives knowing if large colonies of bees are around they might attack them.

This subject has been of concern and it was brought up at a recently online think tank discussion as a problem, which needed their attention. One online think tank member Warren States; African killer bees are indeed worth someone's energy; the chemical folks have been driven back by the environmentalists. To figure out what physical dependencies they have when they act as a single entity in the swarm seems like a worthy effort.

Surely, although there are bigger problems and the bees do provide plentiful pollination services to crops. Another think tank member was unconcerned about the few number of attacks world w ide and stated; Too me, well I just like to study efficiency, battle tactics and I love winning and therefore it makes sense to look at who is winning and why? Thus how do the bees do it is of value indeed. And in studying that we maybe able to figure out a way to stop them, steer them or defeat a swarm in a military battle if it becomes necessary. There appears to be a component of battle tactics, as well as finding and securing a way to exploit weakness in here.

It seems people study bee colonies and swarms for many reasons, some to better understand the strategy and some to help people. But it is good to know at least one online think tank is attempting to get to the bottom of this issue as it sorts through these incredible creatures and their swarming techniques to solve problems and protect people. Consider all this in 2006.

No Single Nation Can Impose Democracy on Another

Imposing Democracy on Another nation is something that many academics and philosopher types have debated over many decades. Some believe that no single nation can impose Democracy over Another nation. Indeed these same people will argue that no group of nations should impose democracy over Another either. And this would also include any group called a League of Nations, United Nations or One World Government.

However there are many who are in the United Nati ons who believe that there are many instances when such imposition would be necessary to prevent war, human rights abuses or and out of control government regime. It is for this reason that many could argue that there will be circumstances when it will be necessary to remove a radical regime such as a dictatorship and replace that governments leadership with a Democracy.

What do you do with a Nation State whose leadership insists on funding and sponsoring International Terrorists or even giving them nuclear weapons to use on large civilian populations and cities? Perhaps a protocol is needed of when to impose a legitimate democracy on Another nation and rather than allowing the Security Council of the United Nations, which is totally political, to decide when to do something about a menacing problem which is bound to get worse. Consider this in 2006.

She Wrote the Book on Fakin' It

She brought the Guitar into vogue. She created the first fake books designed for regular folks who didn't want to or were unable to invest the time and effort to master the Guitar. Who was she?

Catherina Josepha Pelzer was born in 1821 in Mulheim, on the Rhine. She was the daughter of Ferdinand Pelzer, a leading German Guitarist during the early part of the 19th Century. Ferdinand began tutoring his daughter when she was quite young - a task made easier by the fact that young Catherina was quite the musical prodigy. She made her London concert debut at the age of seven. Soon after, her family moved from Germany to England where she received much critical acclaim and gained fame as a performer. Her concerts and recitals inspired people all over to pick up the Guitar. Catherina later became much sought after as a Guitar teacher, instructing the likes of the Princesses Louise and Beatrice, among others. In 1854 Catherina Pelzer married a renowned flautist and composer, and took the name by which she is more commonly remembered - Madame Sidney Pratten.

After some time as an instructor, she realized that many people were not inclined to invest the necessary effort to master the Guitar. Many others simply did not possess the skills to do so. She had the solution, which came in the form of several publications. Her most popular and successful manual, Learning the Guitar Simplified, included easy exercises, each of which was followed by a simple song, along with diagrams of the fingerboard to show where the notes were found. She created another publication that color-coded each note in the diatonic scale. This was known, logically enough, as Colored Diagrams of the Notes of the Fingerboard of the Guitar. And for those who had very little time to practice, she put together Instructions for the Guitar Tuned in E Major. One tuning. No muss, no fuss.

Mme. Pratten died in 1895, leaving behind a wonderful legacy. She had brought the Guita r into popularity by showing the world how beautifully it could be played and by making it easier for the average person to play it well - or at least close enough for rock and roll.
